Sandspiel is a 2D physics sandbox where you paint materials onto a canvas and watch them interact. There is no score, fixed objective, or level progression; you decide whether to build an environment, create reactive art, or keep testing combinations until the scene changes.

How to Play Sandspiel

Choose from 20 elements and paint them directly onto the canvas. Sand falls and piles up, water flows, plants grow when supplied with water, and materials such as fire, lava, oil, and acid can quickly alter a carefully built scene. You can also adjust the brush size, pause the simulation, or use undo to return to an earlier point in the experiment.

Start with solids, liquids, or loose particles to shape the scene. Build walls and other solid structures before introducing water, fire, gases, or corrosive materials so you can control their movement. Layering materials helps you see how gravity changes the result, while changing one element at a time makes each reaction easier to understand.

Fire can affect plants, wood, and oil, while lava can turn to stone. Try small combinations first, then expand the experiment once you know how the materials behave. If a reaction ruins the scene, use undo, pause the simulation before making another change, or rebuild the affected area.

Sandspiel also lets you upload creations and browse artwork made by other players. An account is required to post art publicly for others to interact with.

Game Controls

  • Use the left mouse button to select tools and paint materials on the canvas.
  • Drag while holding the left mouse button to draw and place elements.
  • Adjust the brush size when you need finer control over the amount of material.
  • Pause the simulation to inspect the scene or plan the next change.
  • Use undo to return to an earlier point in the experiment.
